The
program is designed to recognize students who raise their grades to
an acceptable range and maintain or continue raising them from one
grading period to the next. Recognition
includes being placed on the schools Bugs Honor Roll, a presentation
of an achievement certificate, pins and other giveaways.
This year the Waco
Kiwanis Club teamed up with J.H. Hines and Doris Miller
Elementary schools. The two schools were rated unacceptable by the
Texas Department of Education. At
the end of the year J.H. Hines was raised to an acceptable rating
and Doris Miller will possibly be raised to the same level.
Over 90% of the students qualified and raised their grades at
least one level and 70% raised their grades two grade points.
Each grading period the school gave the results
to the Waco Kiwanis Club, and an award presentation was held.
Each student who raised their grade were given a BUGS
T-Shirt, certificate of achievement, and were entered into a drawing
for a girls and boys bike at each participating school. The parents
were invited to a reception of cake and punch after lunch period to
help celebrate the children’s success.
Was the
program successful?
According to the principals and the staff of the schools, the
Waco Kiwanis Club was told the same staff has been at these
locations for the past 5 years, and that the difference was the BUGS
PROGRAM.
